I have always had lots of steak in my freezer and then before that I watched my mum with loads of steak in her freezer.

We all got it from the same place. It was a meat factory near where we lived and, on a Saturday, they would have it on a special customer deal, and we would all bulk buy the steak and it would last ages.

I hated it as a kid (kid vegetarian) but as a grown up I loved how much it saved us money and that you could prepare it into different freezer bags.

You would be sold beef steak as a big piece of meat and then slice it up into the steak size that you liked.

Then you could defrost the steak, pan fry (not air fryers back then) and have a steak dinner whenever you wanted.

Can You Cook Steak From Frozen?

Yes, you can cook steak from frozen. Though many people prefer it cooked from thawed rather than frozen.

If I was cooking steak on the barbecue for example, I would prefer the steak defrosted first, compared to in the air fryer when I prefer air fryer frozen steak. Or if you have a pressure cooker do try our instant pot frozen steak recipe.

Best Way To Defrost Steak?

The best way to defrost steak is to get it out three hours before bed and leave it on your worktop. Because on an evening its not that hot, it will slowly thaw your steak and then place it into the fridge overnight and it will finish the defrost process.

Of course, we don’t always plan to cook steak for dinner the next day, so if you need to defrost your steak faster then the microwave is the best way to defrost your steak.

The microwave is the fastest way to defrost steak. Overnight methods are fantastic if you can, but you can turn to your microwave if in a hurry.

We also didn’t just defrost one steak fast but 4 steaks that are completely frozen to each other.

Yes, you can thaw steak in the microwave and that is exactly what we will be showing you how to do today.

We will be taking 4 frozen solid sirloin steaks from the freezer and then using the microwave to completely thawing them before cooking air fryer sirloin steak.

Steak – We are using 3 frozen sirloin steaks that have been stuck together. These frozen sirloin steaks are typical 8oz steaks and the perfect size for dinner.

Steamer Basket – Then we also used our steamer basket. That is because it is the right size to cover the steaks. Covering the steaks is important when you defrost a steak in the microwave because you want to go slow and not cook the steak but just defrost.

Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this thawing steak in the microwave recipe it has just been our Panasonic Microwave Oven. We have this one and its wonderful for many types of microwave recipes.

How To Defrost Steak In Microwave?

  • Prepare. Place frozen steaks into the steamer basket in their packaging with a little water in the bottom and add the lid.
  • Defrost. Next place the steamer basket into the microwave and defrost the frozen steak for 12 minutes on the defrost setting.
  • Separate. When the microwave beeps, remove the steaks, remove the packaging and they will now separate.
  • Defrost. Then place the partly frozen steaks back into the steamer basket without the lid and microwave for a further 8 minutes.

You now have thawed steak ready for the air fryer, or the grill.

How Long Do You Defrost Steak In The Microwave?

To defrost steak in the microwave, we found that it took us 20 minutes. Though this was for 3 8oz frozen sirloin steaks. If you are doing smaller steaks, then the time can be different, plus we have 850 wattage yet you might have a 1200 watt microwave so yours might be quicker.

We recommend a couple of checks on your steak in the microwave to see if your time needs tweaking.

How Long After Defrosting Steak Should It Be Cooked?

You can cook your steak straight away after defrosting it. There is no wait that is needed. Simply, once defrosted you can head straight to your barbecue with it. Or if you are getting ready for later, place it into the fridge for later in the day.

  • Place the frozen steaks into your steamer basket with a tablespoon of water. Its okay if they are still in the packaging. Place the lid on the steamer basket.

  • Microwave for 12 minutes on the defrost meat option.

  • Remove the lid and take the packaging away from the steaks. The steaks should be partly thawed now and come apart. Place them back into the microwave.

  • Microwave on defrost for a further 8 minutes or until fully thawed. They are now ready for cooking.

Reheating – You can also use the microwave to reheat leftover steak. It’s a great option for when you go to a restaurant and the steak is too big for you.
