Enough with this "soft skills" nonsense. Call these critical interpersonal abilities what they are -- "Human Skills" -- and make them central to lawyer education, licensing, and competence in the post-AI world. My newest Substack:"We need to start responding to this coming transformation of our profession right now, by right-sizing the technical instruction of lawyers in the post-AI world and (finally) introducing and elevating education, training, and practice in the Human Skills of lawyering." https://lnkd.in/eJ_99wHf

This brilliant and compelling piece by Jordan Furlong is an absolute must-read. Its value cannot be fully appreciated simply by scanning the headline and the hook in the image. Trust me, today's a good day to read a complete article, and there's so much here to think about. For anyone who doesn't know Jordan, he's the smartest futurist we have in our profession. (And he is not expected to succumb to AI-will-destroy-lawyers-and end-the-human-race doomerism.) As always, since I love people who agree with me, I appreciate this call to action - in which Jordan repeats a plea we (and many of our colleagues) have been making for years to law schools and firms alike -- to teach interpersonal and other communication skills and topics that go beyond doctrinal law and technical skills. But if the few "non-billable" minutes to read Jordan's post come at too great a cost, here's an excerpt. (And go to Jordan's original LinkedIn post to see some excellent comments-- and an opposing view from Paolo Tonelli, which I found interesting.)"Lawyers with strong 'Human Skills' historically have been those with prosperous client relationships, happy colleagues and employees, healthy personal lives, and highly profitable businesses. That’s not some weird coincidence;that’s the way we’re supposed to be.We lost that thread decades ago, and ever since, we’ve been raising up cohorts of brilliant legal technicians with closed minds and cold hearts, to everyone’s detriment. That’s going to change someday soon, thanks to Generative AI’s inevitable consumption of technical legal work. So we need to start responding to this coming transformation of our profession right now, by right-sizing the technical instruction of lawyers in the post-AI world and (finally) introducing and elevating education, training, and practice in the Human Skills of lawyering.Law schools, this is for you. Licensing authorities, this is for you. Professional development people in law firms, this is for you. We need to restore the development of humanity in lawyers, and we need you to take the lead."#lawschools #lawfirms #businessdevelopment #interpersonalskills #AI

If you're looking for new ways to keep students engaged, this post is for you! 📚 Dive into the world of the Socratic method: a powerful teaching tactic where questions drive learning. 💡 Law schools often employ this method to cultivate critical-thinking skills and sharpen intellectual prowess in students tackling complex legal concepts. Why should teachers everywhere embrace this approach? Because it empowers learners to think deeply, articulate ideas effectively, and cultivate a sharper understanding of the subject matter. In a world that demands agile minds and sharp analysis, the Socratic method equips students with the tools they need to thrive. 🌟 #Greatify #teachingmethods #socraticmethod #educationalleadership #learners #criticalthinking

I see a strange world on the horizon where, due to the growth, adoption, and use cases of LLMs, the ability to generate content at scale will become even more necessary, which will end up being supplemented by LLMs to help create scale. So, we'll see LLM responses when searching for information that are based on information that has been created by LLMs....That will be interesting.

If you can't describe it clearly, you don't comprehend it. However, if you can apply the information and use it to solve issues and answer questions, you fully understand it.
